State Water Board Releases Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for Chromium-6 MCL by ACWA Staff Jun 20, 2023 Water News SACRAMENTO – The State Water Resources Control Board last week released the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for hexavalent chromium (chromium-6), proposing a maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 parts per billion (ppb). The State Water Board will hold a public hearing to discuss the proposed MCL on Aug. 2 at 1 p.m. State Water Board staff will give a presentation on the proposed regulations and provide an opportunity for oral comments with written comments on the proposed MCL due Aug. 4. More information on the hearing is available online. ACWA plans to provide both oral and written comments that stress technical and economic considerations that water agencies face in complying with an ambitious MCL. ACWA will also continue to advocate for a feasible compliance period for the proposed MCL that would allow water agencies to take the steps necessary to comply with it. The proposed MCL will be considered for final adoption by the State Water Board later this year after consideration of oral and written comments. The proposed MCL was announced last year as part of an administrative package that also included monitoring requirements and information regarding approved treatment technologies. The package is available on the State Water Board’s website.
