Western Municipal Water District Advances Sustainable Energy Project by Western Municipal Water District Mar 23, 2022 Member Submitted News RIVERSIDE – Western Municipal Water District (Western) is pleased to announce the award of $2.4 million from the California Public Utilities Commission Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) for a sustainable energy redundancy project at the Mockingbird Pump Station. The Tesla Megapack Battery System project installs two 572-kilowatt (KW) Megapack batteries that will enhance energy redundancy by offering 11 hours of continuous power for the Mockingbird Pump Station in the event of an electrical grid power loss and realizing cost-savings opportunities during periods when energy costs are high. “Western continues to lead the industry into the future by investing in sustainable and innovative energy projects that power our water system,” stated Western’s General Manager Craig Miller. “By enhancing water system reliability and reducing operating costs, Western ensures financial stability and value to the customer.” Tesla estimates that the batteries could save at least $50,000 annually in energy costs by charging the Megapack batteries when energy costs are low and discharging the stored energy during peak hours. This discharged energy can power the Mockingbird Pump Station or be sold back into the California power grid. The $2.4 million SGIP grant will provide funding for the equipment, installation, and ongoing maintenance for ten years at the Mockingbird Pump Station.
